While you’re basking in the joys of being a new parent, you’ll also be becoming accustomed to your responsibilities towards your baby. Obviously, this includes general healthcare, but your baby’s dental care is also very important. You may be wondering when to take your bundle of joy in for their first dental appointment. It may be surprising to learn that the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child’s first dental visit happen by their first birthday.

The idea of bringing your baby into a dental office at such a young age may seem odd to you. However, these visits are important for preventing cavities and other issues. Studies have shown that over 1 in 4 children has at least one cavity by age 4.

When you and your child visit Texas Kids Dental, Dr. Jeffrey Erickson will share lots of helpful tips with you. Our dentist will talk with you about:

– Caring for your baby or toddler’s mouth
– Fluoride
– Bad habits, like thumb-sucking
– Preventing accidents that harm the face or teeth
– Teething and other milestones in your baby’s development
– How your baby’s diet affects his or her oral health

Dr. Jeffrey Erickson will examine your child’s chompers and gums for signs of cavities and other issues. In addition, our hygienist may clean your baby’s pearly whites. If your baby needs it, fluoride may be used to give his or her teeth an extra little boost against cavities. Before you leave our office, we will answer each and every one of your questions and schedule your bundle of joy’s next visit.
