Tips for Helping Your Children Avoid Tooth Decay

Posted .

Your child deserves strong and healthy chompers. Unfortunately, their little teeth don’t care for themselves and children don’t typically know how to care for their smile. This means it’s your job as their parent to help them clean and care for their smile and help them prevent dental issues. One dental issue to prevent is tooth decay. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Jeffrey Erickson, is happy to give you the tips you need. Those tips are:

-Help them brush and floss: Keeping up on oral hygiene is key when preventing cavities. This is because each task removes the plaque and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Plaque and bacteria are the culprits of tooth decay. So, make sure to help your child brush twice a day and floss once a day.

-Bring them in for checkups: Dental checkups are vital when preventing cavities because it removes the cavity-causing substances from the teeth and gums. So, make sure to bring your child into our office every six months for their checkups. You should start bringing them in around their first birthday.

-Don’t send them to bed with a bottle: When you send them to bed with a bottle of milk or a bottle of sugary or high-carbohydrate liquids, it promotes baby bottle tooth decay. It’s best to avoid this problem as much as possible. If you must send your child to bed with a bottle, fill the bottle with water.
